Aran Kay All-Time XI

Updated: Sep 13, 2019

Stewart Rogers was an incisive opening bowler/all-rounder in the eighties early nineties who skippered in his final seasons.

Rupert Cleaver was extremely rapid in his youth with a legendary throwing arm (gate to trees across the square).

Peter was an excellent keeper even in his 40s when I first played with him and a more than useful if underrated spin bowler 6-12 against Steyning.

Jim could bowl all day at pace at one end but would not get the opportunity.

Most of the others are, to use the Donald Rumsfeld's quote "Known knowns"! I did manage to get Bob once to do overs 13-16 of a spell when we were bereft of bowling by the simple expedient of turning my arm over a single time. The spell ended with him gasping "Cider! Cider". A threat is often more potent...Facing Reuben in the nets can be like attending your own dissection if you get him motivated.

Dave Robinson - aggressive top order batsman who could still coax a 40 plus run partnership out of my old legs on a Sunday at Bramber..

Mick Armstrong one of the best allrounders to grace this club aggressive batsman and bowler and took on the mantle of the Sunday side from Bob carrying on his ethos of a predominantly relaxed friendly but if roused uber competitive side of vets and emerging colts. A good team to play for.

Tim Monday - Fine batsman and by then line and length medium pacer who transitioned from the then Saturday 1s skipper at Wisborough to one of the lads on Sunday and always help and encouragement to the lesser lights. Top guy. Like Bo sadly missed.

JEM . Aggressive opening batsman and more than competent bowler now skippering Saturday 1s . In the last match I played with him he had to leave early. In partnership we put on 50 plus runs in little more than three overs without me troubling the scorers. I then made the mistake of telling him I hadn't scored and was run out next ball. A single was there for forty year younger legs. He duly completed his century in the next few overs leaving me to ponder on who would be best remembered , the centurion or the one who scored nothing in a 100+ run partnership.

Ben Lucking. Excellent spin bowler emerging batsman already a stalwart of the 1s . Best is yet to come.

Eleven more than capable skippers.
